Of being a photographer

My take from the Esplanade Theatre this evening.. the Cullberg Ballet
When I was young, well actually until today, I would watch a musical and i'd wish I could sing like the actors. When I read about fireman saving people, I would wish that I could be a fireman. When I see naval divers diving deep into the sea, I'd feel like signing on with the navy the very next moment. When I see a teacher being able to inspire, I'd feel like teaching is a very noble job. Today, I saw ballerinas, the very strong-in-the-core type of ballerinas, I wish I was at fit as them.
The thing is, i've always loved trying new things. I love learning new skills and meeting people from all walks of life. And the one thing I cherish about my job is that, being a photographer, allows me to meet all these people. And they give you a sneak preview to the things that they do and experience. So I guess being a photographer allows you a sneak preview into the lives of others. You kinda get a taste of the other side of life. It humbles you sometimes, but most of all, it never fails to inspire.
I felt a little under the weather this evening as i'm fighting the germs passed on from Nate who was very ill over the past week. Part of me really wanted to call off the shoot at the Esplanade this evening. I didn't have to cover this. It's an art feature. It's not news sensitive but after a good session with Geok Mei where she rearranged a couple of my muscles and IT band, i managed to muster up the energy to go for the assignment. The thing is, i'm glad i've learnt how to switch mindsets. If i'm going to spend the time travelling to an assignment, I might as well make the best picture out of the situation. And it definitely paid off.
Not only did I get a taste of modern European ballet, I managed to get a shot i'm slightly more than happy with.
If you're into modern ballet, catch the Cullberg Ballet from Sweden. They are here as part of the Singapore Arts Festival 2009 performance and will be on June 5-6, 2009 at 8pm.

Ditto on the wanting to be when you see someone in the profession achieving something remarkable.

I've been lurking around your blog for a while but thought i'd get vocal cause I saw another of your photos on the WSJ photo journal: http://blogs.wsj.com/photojournal/2009/06/09/pictures-of-the-day-194/

:)

On the photo above, it doesn't look like you were using flash. Were you at a crazy ISO to stop them in midflight like that?

HI charlene.. thanks for dropping by and passing on that website.. its nice feedback.

I didn't use flash for that picture above cause it isn't allowed. And yes i had to bump up the ISO to 6400 but im using a 5DmarkII so it helps cause it has a good threshold on noise. It was a VERY dark performance and almost impposible to shoot.. haha

There was another one of yours on the same site some weeks ago as well, for the life of me i can't remember when. Keep an eye on it if you've the time. It's a good site.

6400... phew... i can keep dreaming of that sort of usable ISO until (or, if ever) i get myself a D700 (yes, i'm a fan of the dark side :) ).

Enjoying your images. Post more of them if you're able.

Cheers!
